What documents do I need for my Dutch tax return?

With one folder per year, you have everything at hand when it is time for your tax return (aangifte). Here is how to start.

What to do

  1. Make one folder per tax year. On paper or on your computer. Write on it the year you are filing for.
  2. Add your annual income statements. In Dutch: jaaropgaaf. From your employer, benefits office or pension fund. They usually arrive early in the year.
  3. Add your bank overviews. Your bank's annual overview, with the balance on 1 January. Savings accounts too.
  4. Do you own your home? Keep the annual mortgage statement and the WOZ decision (WOZ-beschikking) from the municipality.
  5. Keep receipts for healthcare costs and donations. Some healthcare costs and donations are deductible. belastingdienst.nl explains which.
  6. Check the pre-filled tax return. The Belastingdienst fills in a lot for you already. Compare it with your own papers.
  7. Look at the date in your letter or message. The Belastingdienst tells you when to file your return. Put that date in your calendar.
